Ukraine In The Eyes of The West

Ukraine emerged on the world stage as an independent country following a referendum on December 1, 1991. These newspaper articles published after the referendum demonstrate different Western narratives about Ukraine: While the British Independent opinion piece portrays Ukraine as desperately craving the West’s attention (a view also voiced by U.S. Secretary of State Baker in internal government discussions), the Washington Post news article portrays Ukraine as a “confident nation taking its place in Europe.”
