Sebastia, Last Stop

The fields around the abandoned train station at Sebastia in the northern West Bank were the scene of a crucial confrontation between settlers and the Rabin government in December 1975. Photos from newspaper archives at the time show the train station still complete. It was collapsing in June 2004 when I visited, but I could pace off distances in the fields, learn the topography, and find the room in the train station where a climactic meeting was held.  – Gershom Gorenberg
